Mountain View: UDOT plan friendly to environment

Clean-air advocates and pollution-wary parents concerned about the health impact of the Mountain View freeway can breathe easier. The Utah Department of Transportation has unveiled the final environmental study for the west-side highway connecting Lehi to Salt Lake City, and the plan should help allay their concerns.

The proximity of the proposed highway to public schools – it will run north-south at 5800 West – had Utah Moms for Clean Air and other health advocacy groups fuming. Particulate matter and other pollutants in automotive exhaust is particularly harsh on young lungs.

But UDOT – gasp! – took their concerns to heart.

The state will spend $3.1 million for air-filtering systems for schools located along the route, and another $1 million for air-monitoring systems outside the schools. That means kids may want to hold their breath when they’re walking up the sidewalk, but they can be assured of fresh air once inside. State officials also agreed to purchase land for a school in West Valley City in the event Granite School District officials decide to relocate Hillside Elementary, the closest school to what will eventually be an eight-lane freeway.

That’s right. Eventually. While long-term plans still call for a superhighway, and the state will acquire enough land now to allow for the eventual expansion, a scaled-back design will make Mountain View a four-lane limited access road at birth.

The highway will be connected to major east-west thoroughfares with intersections, not exits, at 1.5-mile intervals.

While traffic safety will no doubt suffer under the revised plan, the initial cost savings and pollution reduction from the two-step approach should be significant. And in another development lauded by environmental activists, there’s a mass transit component to the project.

There are plans for bus rapid transit lanes, separated from traffic by curbs, to link up with west-side TRAX light-rail lines currently under development. The mass transit plan should help alleviate the need for extra Mountain View lanes for the short-term, while further reducing pollution from automobile emissions.

Clean-air proponents can give themselves a pat on the back for their strident advocacy, and give UDOT a hand for listening and responding to their concerns. crossed legs girls

SLC leaders say streetcars desired after transit tour

Mayor Becker says a network here needs to be a priority after seeing how much Northwest cities benefit

Giddy about the efficiency of Portland’s downtown streetcar system – and the economic spoils it spurs – Salt Lake City leaders are determined to bring new tracks and trolleys to Utah’s capital.
   Fresh from a Northwest transit tour of Portland, Seattle and Vancouver with 28 city and business officials, Mayor Ralph Becker says a new streetcar network, beginning in downtown, is a priority for his freshman administration.
   “Lay the tracks and development happens,” Becker told reporters Thursday morning at City Hall. “That’s what we saw place after place.”
   The vision, shared by the Redevelopment Agency, Salt Lake Chamber and the City Council, is to see streetcars – they stop on each block and charge a fare in some areas – connect to both light- and heavy-rail hubs. Eventually, they could spread into neighborhoods – the planned Sugar House trolley would serve as a model – rendering vehicles unnecessary for capital visitors and residents alike.
   “Within a five-year horizon, it’s doable,” said Bob Farrington, the city’s new economic development director.
   Call it back to the future for Utah’s capital, which once boasted a bustling web of street trolleys but has since seen its 150 miles of track buried by concrete. Becker says resurrecting those lines is not practical, but insists laying new streetcar tracks can be done in 18 months – and it’s cheaper than TRAX.”

Preliminary results of a Utah study seem to indicate that infertility could be related to air pollution.

Ahmad Hammoud, a fellow at the University of Utah’s division of reproductive endocrinology and infertility, recently analyzed Salt Lake City air quality data and linked it to sperm quality data collected at the U.’s infertility clinic.

His preliminary results showed that as fine-particle pollution increased – the peaks are in December, January and February – the ability of sperm to wriggle and swim slightly dropped a month or two later. The delay is because it takes sperm between two to three months to mature.

Air pollution is just one potential factor in infertility, and more study is needed. Hammoud plans more research on effects of fine particle pollution, carbon monoxide, and ozone on sperm.

Robert Redford was so struck by a story of Texas mayors, ranchers and other citizens who stood up against plans for a batch of new coal-fired power plants that he narrated a film about it.

The actor and founder of the Sundance Film Festival is lending his voice to a 34-minute documentary called “Fighting Goliath: Texas Coal Wars.” The film is being shown in seven cities in Utah and Nevada next week.

Redford ’s hoping the story inspires others to face off against the “mythology” of nonrenewable resources and consider renewable energy alternatives.

“It makes no sense going in a direction that represents yesterday,” Redford said in an interview with The Associated Press this week.

The story centers on a fight that started in 2006 over 19 proposed coal-fired power plants in central and east Texas . The plans galvanized a diverse group of citizens who might otherwise have divergent political viewpoints: ranchers, environmentalists, business leaders, legislators, lawyers and more than a dozen local mayors.

Omega-3 Supplements Appear Protective against PM Effects

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, believed to lessen the risk of many chronic ailments including arthritis, cancer, heart disease, and memory loss, may also help protect the heart against certain damaging effects of air pollution. In a new study by an international team of researchers, supplementation with omega-3s was associated with significantly reduced cardiac stress caused by particulate matter less than 2.5 µm in diameter (PM2.5) in a group of elderly individuals in Mexico City [EHP116:1237-1242; Romieu et al.]. The study is the first to examine the effects of omega-3s on biomarkers of cellular response to the oxidative stress of air pollution.

Exposure to high levels of particulates from vehicle exhaust and industrial emissions raises the risk of hypertension, heart arrhythmia, heart attack, and stroke, with the elderly being particularly susceptible. Some of the authors had previously shown both that PM2.5 promotes heart disease by diminishing heart-rate variability and that omega-3 supplementation could increase heart-rate variability. The current study was intended to find out how omega-3s achieve their effects.

The study population of 52 elderly nursing home residents was chronically exposed to high PM2.5 levels; particulate levels inside the nursing home, where residents spent nearly all their time, correlated with the smoggy surroundings outside. For four months starting in 2001, half the participants in the double-blind study received fish oil supplements at doses typical for over-the-counter supplement users; the other half received soy oil supplements.
